Monthly company-sponsored programs can motivate staff to improve their overall performance.

Companies value high-performing employees and seek ways to motivate staff to increase performance and satisfaction. Programs that recognize employees and provide incentives for workers to improve offer value-added benefits. Celebrations and company-sponsored activities do not have to be expensive because every effort counts and employees can appreciate the details if they enrich their professional or personal lives.

  1. Recognition and Motivation Celebrations

    • Employees can look forward to a staff celebration for birthdays in that month and to highlight select employees. A monthly birthday celebration of cake, doughnuts or pastries entices employees to join the festivities. Recognizing an employee of the month, who is nominated by other staff members or department heads, can motivate others to improve their performance.

Establish a regular slot for the monthly celebration so employees can look forward to the perk. For example, host a breakfast celebration on the first Monday of the month or schedule a 3 p.m. staff gathering on the first Friday of the month.

Simple giveaways, such as birthday cards, tell employees they are valued. Employee of the Month awards can be as simple as a certificate, or provide value such as a prime parking spot, money or time off.

    Contest

    • Each month can feature a theme or quality for a contest. Employees can nominate and vote for peers according to a theme, such as Most Optimistic, Best Dressed and Most Helpful. The monthly winner can be featured in the company newsletter or on the website. Each month, the company can celebrate the valued quality and highlight the person most appreciated by their peers. The valued person can enjoy lunch with the president or management team.

The peer-based contest and a prize of quality time with management provide incentives to employees to be at their best.

    Potluck

    • Hosting a monthly potluck fosters employee relations. If the company supplies salad and soft drinks, the monthly gathering provides employees with an alternative to bag lunches and fast food. Monthly potlucks can also be upgraded periodically to a chili cook-off, international food festival or barbecue.

    Short Day

    • Companies can identify one day each month where employees can have the option of leaving early or arriving late. This is modeled after a Summer Fridays schedule, where workers have the option of taking a short work day, provided they cover their normal work hours. For example, for an employee to take a half-day, they would need to have worked four hours to make up this time, or one extra hour per week. This Short Day program motivates employees to plan ahead and give extra effort.
