Help for Low Income Families in West Virginia
Low-income families in West Virginia can apply for assistance from one of the state's welfare programs. The programs provide support for both working and non-working families and are administered by the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources. All the programs are open to U.S. citizens and qualified non-citizens.

West Virginia Works
-
West Virginia Works is a federally-funded cash assistance program for low-income families. The program provides families with minor children temporary cash assistance that can be used to pay monthly expenses, such as rent and utilities. The goal of the program is to help families in West Virginia become self-sufficient. Adults enrolled in the program can receive job training and assistance in obtaining employment. Participants can also receive assessment testing to identify skills that must be learned to obtain employment.
Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program
-
The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) helps eligible families purchase food on a monthly basis. Disabled or elderly persons, families with minor children or other qualified persons receive benefits each month on a Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card. Applicants to the program must pass a net income and resources test to be considered eligible. The amount a family can earn and still qualify for SNAP in West Virginia is based on the federal government's income guidelines and poverty levels.

Women, Infants and Children's Program
-
The Women, Infants and Children's Program (WIC) is a federally-funded program designed to help low-income families maintain good health through proper nutrition. Pregnant women, children under the age of 5 and infants qualify for the program. Low-income families in West Virginia can receive WIC vouchers that can be redeemed at authorized dealers for select foods, such as cheese, cereal and milk. The program also provides immunizations for enrolled children.
Medicaid
-
In West Virginia, qualified applicants can receive medical assistance through the federally-funded Medicaid program. Medicaid provides help to families with children under the age of 18, pregnant women and adults currently receiving assistance through West Virginia Works. People who receive Supplemental Security Income automatically receive coverage from Medicaid. Doctor visits, prescription drugs and dental visits are all covered under Medicaid.
