Scholarships for Women in Journalism

You have a passion for the printed word and finding the truth. What's more, you have decided that this is your career path -- a life in journalism. For the woman looking to get a post-secondary education in journalism, there are a number of scholarships for women in journalism. These will help you pay for college without breaking the bank on loans.

  1. Association of Women Journalists

    • The Association of Women Journalists offers a number of scholarships based on location. For example, there are scholarships for women in the greater Dallas-Fort Worth area and the Chicagoland area. There are also regional memorial scholarships such as the Joy Darrow Memorial Scholarship in Chicago and the Vivian Castleberry Awards in Dallas. Student journalists are expected to show an interest in issues affecting women and to showcase this in their application to the association.

New York Women in Communications Foundation

    • The New York Women in Communications Foundation offers another regional scholarship. Female students in the tri-state area and Pennsylvania may apply for the scholarship. High school seniors, undergraduate and graduate students are eligible. College juniors studying in a journalism program located in one of the aforementioned states are also eligible, even if their permanent residence is not in one of those states. Students applying for the latter scholarship must be able to commit to a full-time internship.

    Anne Trabue Scholarship

    • The Anne Trabue Scholarship is named after a famous golfer from Southern California. This scholarship is open to those who excel at both journalism and golf. Women applying for the scholarship must have a desire to work in sports journalism. The Womens Southern California Golf Association provides this scholarship. Applications may be downloaded from the WSCGA's website and must be submitted by the first of May and November of every year.

    State Press Women

    • Different states have different organizations known as Press Women. For example, the Arizona Press Women and the Colorado Press Women. Many of these organizations offer scholarships for women in journalism. Arizona provides a scholarship of $1,000, as of 2010, while Colorado's scholarship totals $2,000 for the same year. Rules vary from one state to another, with some states offering scholarships for high school seniors and other states offering scholarships for college upperclassmen.
