Structure

Video of the Day

The next time you purchase a large appliance or piece of furniture, save the box. Large boxes are also found at packing and shipping supply stores. A refrigerator costume requires a large box that fits over your head and torso, and stops at your knees so you can walk easily. If you can't find a large enough box, improvise by attaching two boxes together.

Section the box off into two compartments, one for the fridge and the other for the freezer. At least one section needs to feature an opening door so you can see when you walk. Cut slats into flat pieces of cardboard and attach them inside so they look like shelves, making sure to position the shelves in the box so you have enough room for your body to fit comfortably behind the shelves. Measure the amount of space your body takes up for accuracy. Cut arm holes into the sides of the box.

Adding to the Realism

Your refrigerator costume needs some realism so it looks believable. Paint the outside and inside of the box including the shelves. Use colors such as black, white and silver. To disguise your body inside the costume, wear clothing that matches your paint color. Create handles for your refrigerator using cardboard, painting them or covering them with duct tape. Using a hot glue gun, attach empty boxes, cartons and containers inside the costume. Plastic fruits and vegetables, found at your local craft store, also add to the realism of the inside of the fridge. Decorate both the inside and outside of your refrigerator costume. Don't be afraid to get creative.

Ideas for Older Kids and Adults

To increase the scare factor of your costume, adjust your refrigerator costume so your head looks like it is sitting on a shelf in the refrigerator or freezer section. Paint your face a grayish blue color and put fake blood on your neck to make it look like a severed head. This costume is sure to illicit a gasp, especially if you have someone to help you close and open the door for a surprise. This version is appropriate for adults and older kids, but it may be too scary for younger children.

Ideas for Younger Children

Situating your child's head on one of the shelves in the refrigerator, you can make a kid-friendly version of this costume. Paint your child's face to look like a fruit or vegetable, such as a pumpkin or a tomato. This costume is sure to be popular and get a few laughs. It also provides a bonding experience as you and your child work on putting it together.
