Scholarships for Military Dependent Children
Because members of the United States military sacrifice time, money, health and sometimes even their lives, many organizations exist to help give back to military personnel and their families. Scholarship and grant programs are a common way these organizations help military families. Scholarships intended exclusively for military children come from a variety of sources and go to dependents of members of all five military branches.

Military Foundation Scholarships
-
Scholarships for military dependents come from nonprofit and private military foundations and organizations. The Scholarships for Military Children program is sponsored by the Defense Commissary Agency and has provided over $8.3 million dollars over the last 10 years to military dependents. Another organization, ThanksUSA, was formed specifically to say "thank you" to military personnel by providing scholarships to their dependents. ThanksUSA scholarships go to dependents of all military branches and can be used to study any major at any school.
Branch-Specific Scholarships
-
Each branch also has its own organizations and groups that sponsor scholarship programs for dependents, like the Air Force Sergeants Association and Airmen Memorial Foundation scholarship program. The AFSA and AMF programs provide scholarships in the amounts of $500 to $3,000 to children of active and former airmen. The Army Emergency Relief organization sponsors the MG James Ursano Scholarship Program for children of active duty, retired and deceased Army personnel.

School Scholarships
-
Military and civilian schools give out scholarships each year to their students who are military dependents. Park University provides the School for Extended Learning at a number of military installations for military personnel and their dependents to earn a degree. Park University also funds a number of dependent scholarships, like the Park Military Family Scholarship. Widener College in Pennsylvania runs the Widener Children of Active and Reserve Military Personnel Educational Scholarship that provides up to $25,000 a year for a child of a military member killed in action.
State-Sponsored Scholarships
-
Several states run scholarship programs for children of military personnel. Scholarship programs may be open to all dependents of active duty members or may specifically offer awards to dependents of veterans, POW or MIA veterans. The state of Montana offers tuition waivers to children of POW/MIA veterans who are Montana residents and will be attending a Montana college or university. North Dakota sponsors a similar program, the North Dakota War Orphan Scholarship, for dependents of deceased, disabled or POW/MIA veterans.
