One small business tip is to research your competition.

There are many simple business tips you can use to maximize your sales and profits. The key is implementing a few new strategies gradually. Business conditions, such as your industry and competition, never stay the same. You will need to stay abreast of new laws, changing technology and varying customer needs. Conduct surveys on occasion to measure customer satisfaction among your customers. Hire more people if you need help in meeting the customers' demands.

  1. Study the Competition

    • You will need to be aware of what your competition is doing to be successful. Study your key competitors' products through their advertising, or see what sizes and flavors they offer at the store or online. Try to find your own niche in the marketplace. Use your competitive research to differentiate your products and services from your competitors. For example, you may find that one competitor offers the lowest prices. Another competitor's specialty may be their high-quality products. Therefore, you could focus on being the service leader by offering the best customer service in the industry. Choose your particular niche in the industry and stick to it. Also, be ready for competitors when they implement new strategies. For example, a competitor may try to emulate or improve upon your customer service standards. Make improvements in your own service to counter this competitor's strategies.

    Know Your Target Market

    • You should easily be able to identify your target market or primary customers. Your primary customers will be the heaviest users of your products. Primary customers will also likely be the ones that are most satisfied with your products or services. Your primary customers will have certain characteristics that set them apart from other customers. Primary customers may be easily identified by demographics, such as gender, age, income, education or household size. For example, your women's clothing store may appeal more to women who are 35 to 54 with an income over $50,000. You can also identify your primary customers by geographical area or benefits they desire, according to the Small Business Administration.

    Use Smaller Ads

    • Small or new business owners will need to find the most cost-effective ways to advertise. You are not going to have the large advertising budget of a major corporation. Therefore, you will need to build your business with smaller ads. For example, place classified ads in newspapers and magazines instead of display ads. Magazine publishers usually charge you by the line for classified ads, unlike display ads. You can save money by using four lines instead of six, for example, to advertise your products. Test your ads by tracking the response you receive. Keep successful ads running as you add more classified ads. Build your business steadily with these smaller ads.

    Promote to Current Customers

    • One simple fact that businesses often overlook is promoting to existing customers. It costs you money to acquire customers through advertising. However, once you have these customers, you can simply mail or email coupons or special deals to them. The bulk of your sales will likely come from current customers, as long as you keep them satisfied. Send catalogs to your customers every month or two. Maintain a database of customer names, addresses and emails. You can acquire customer names, addresses and emails by holding a raffle or doing surveys. Start a loyalty program if you run a retail store. Have customers apply for the loyalty program, then give them a card to use when they make a purchase. Reward customers with gifts or free coupons depending on how much they spend.
