Skills for a Resume

It is not necessary to include a specific "skills" section on a resume, but it can be helpful as a way to summarize your qualifications. It's also good if you've had several similar jobs in a row, and don't wish to keep repeating the same job aspects. And it's a good way to list specific skills you can't find a place for in other parts of your resume, or a way to stretch a resume out if yours is too short to fill a single page. When listing skills on a resume, try to list them in language that corresponds with the job description for which you are applying.

  1. Communication

    • Communication skills involve writing, speaking and listening. Any other languages you can speak in addition to English should also be listed.

    Computer and Technical Skills

    • List any specific software you are proficient in, as well as general categories of types of computer skills, such as word processing, or Internet skills, such as blogging or HTML programming. Any technical knowledge such as repairing small appliances or working with audio/visual equipment is also a skill you might include on a resume.

    Relational and Management Skills

    • Employers look for people who can work as part of a team and who have good interpersonal skills. If you have experience negotiating, supervising, coaching or teaching, it's important to include them on your resume.

    Organizational and Learning Skills

    • If you are a quick learner and able to work independently, you might be just the person an employer is looking for. Other helpful skills are administration, attention to detail, the ability to work under pressure, prioritizing and time management skills.

    Thinking Skills

    • Problem-solving, analytical skills, decision-making and creative skills are important to many employers and for a wide range of jobs.

    Financial Skills, Sales and Marketing

    • Skills such as budgeting, calculating and estimating can be helpful in many jobs. Sales skills can valuable in many positions, and marketing is important in even more types of jobs.
