Law Schools With Night Programs

Law Schools With Night Programs thumbnail
Evening programs permit students to attend law school part time.

Law school is academically demanding, and many students will opt to enroll in programs that allow them to focus on their studies full time. However, some aspiring attorneys cannot attend school during the day because of work or family commitments. To meet their needs, some law schools offer evening divisions where students can attend class on a part-time basis; the curriculum is the same as for full-time students but may take an additional year to complete.

  1. University of Maryland School of Law

    • The law school at the University of Maryland in Baltimore offers several enrollment options to students. Among them is an evening division that allows students to earn a law degree on a part-time basis while maintaining full-time employment. During the first two years, students take classes four nights per week; in years three and four of the program, classes are held two to four nights per week, depending on the number of credits for which the student is enrolled. Students in the evening division complete core courses in four semesters, as compared to three semesters for full-time students in the day division.

    University of Houston Law Center

    • The 90-credit-hour J.D., or Juris Doctorate, program at the University of Houston Law Center is divided into full-time and part-time divisions. Students in the part-time division earn a law degree in four years and attend classes at night. About 55 entering students are enrolled in the university's evening division; during the first year they take between six and 10 credits per term. Evening-division students enroll in a summer session at the end of the first year of law school where they take one core course and one elective.

    New York Law School

    • Part-time students at New York Law School can complete the 86 credits required for graduation in four years. Students in the part-time division go to class at night and take the same required courses as their full-time-division counterparts. Core courses include constitutional law, torts, criminal law and civil procedure. Part-time students also take research, legal skills and writing courses, and select from more than 250 electives to round out the curriculum. Electives permit students to focus on potential future practice areas such as intellectual property, family law and corporate law.

    Southwestern Law School

    • Students in the evening division at Southwestern Law School take the same courses as full-time students and can finish the degree in four years. Evening-division students attend two summer sessions in addition to classes during the fall and spring semesters. Classes are four nights per week, with occasional Saturday electives. The first two years are spent completing the required curriculum, which includes courses in contracts, property and criminal law. During the final two years, students in the evening division take a legal writing class and a mandatory course on the legal profession.
