How Much Money Can You Make As a Phlebotomy Technician?
The word phlebotomy may not be familiar to many individuals outside the medical profession, but the job phlebotomy technicians perform has no doubt been experienced by just about everyone. Phlebotomy involves drawing blood so it can be studied and tested in medical settings. The career does not require the extensive education of many medical positions. Looking at average salaries for the job can help those considering the career.

National Averages
-
According to PayScale, the average salary of phlebotomy technicians ranges from $22,169 to $33,099. Additionally, PayScale finds an average hourly wage ranging from $10.31 to $15.12. This range is based on information from 574 technicians across the country and is accurate as of November 2010.
Experience
-
Those looking to enter the field of phlebotomy should recognize that starting wages may not match national averages, so looking at a breakdown of pay by experience is helpful. PayScale finds that technicians with one to four years of experience earn between $10.04 and $14.04 per hour. Five to nine years in the field brings this range up to $11.88 and $16.34. Lastly, technicians with 10 to 19 years in the field make between $13.12 and $16.46 per hour on average.

Gender
-
PayScale's results reveal an interesting distinction in the pay of men and women involved in phlebotomy. The hourly wage of female technicians ranges from $10.35 to $14.99. Male technicians, who comprise only 13 percent of surveyed individuals, have a higher range from -- $12.33 to $16.54.
Benefits
-
Because phlebotomy technicians are often paid by the hour, as opposed to an annual salary, health care benefits are not always a given. According to PayScale, about 67 percent of technicians receive medical care from their employers. In addition, 55 percent receive dental coverage and 42 percent get vision care.
