Do You Have to Take a Credit Course to File Bankruptcy in Oregon?
The courts require two separate courses for any consumer that wants to have their debts discharged through a bankruptcy. First, all consumers who file a bankruptcy petition must take a course before filing the petition and then take an additional course prior to the bankruptcy case being discharged. Credit counseling courses are required in every state, including Oregon.

Pre-Bankruptcy Class
-
The U.S. bankruptcy courts in Oregon require you to take this class. It must be taken before you file for bankruptcy and within 180 days of filing your bankruptcy petition. You do not have to take the class within the state of Oregon, but you must take the class from a company approved by the court's trustee. The course can be taken in person, over the phone or online. When taking the course online, you will print the certificate once you have completed the course. You must receive a certificate to submit to the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Oregon.
Pre-Discharge Class
-
The pre-discharge class must happen before your bankruptcy case can be officially discharged. This course must also be approved by the U.S. Trustee and can be taken in person, online or over the phone. Once you have completed the course and have your certificate, submit the certificate to the U.S. Bankruptcy Court location where you filed your bankruptcy case. The state of Oregon has bankruptcy court locations in Portland and Eugene.

What do you Learn?
-
The pre-bankruptcy class will help you review your financial situation to determine if there are any other options you may have rather than filing bankruptcy. You will be shown how to create a budget and evaluate both your income and expenses to find alternatives to bankruptcy. The pre-discharge class is designed to help you learn how to manage your finances to avoid falling into the same trap. The class will teach you how to handle your finances and live with a budget.
Finding Classes
-
Visit justice.gov to find a list of approved classes. Search for classes near your in Oregon or classes available over the Internet or phone, whichever best suits your schedule.
