At first glance, the mammoth Cherokee Dam, which stretches more than a mile wide and 175 feet high, looks as though its sole function is simply to provide hydroelectric power to the region and control flooding. The Cherokee Reservoir, however, created by the presence of the dam, also serves as a hot spot for fishing, particularly if you’re looking for crappie and black bass. The dam is also built across the Holston River, a major Eastern Tennessee waterway lined with parks, boating docks and wildlife management areas. The closest hotels to the dam are scattered throughout the nearby city of Morristown.
