How to Compliment the Bustline

Dressing to flatter your figure requires you to pay attention to every part of your body, including your breasts. There are several things you can do to complement your bust, whether you are looking to show off your cleavage or go for something more subtle.

Get Adequate Support

  • To begin with, wear underwire lingerie. Underwire supports the breasts and gives them a slight lift, which allows breasts to appear perkier. Push up and padded bras can also emphasize your chest. These bras are comfortable and effective. They give you the illusion of fuller breasts.

Find the Right Bra

  • On the subject of bras, it is incredibly important to find one that fits. A bra that is too small can cut into your cleavage and create extra, unsightly cleavage. A bra that is too big will drown your shape. If you notice things like extra spillage, straps that slide down, or ones that feel uncomfortably tight, you are likely wearing the wrong bra size. If your bra does not fit correctly, take a trip to a lingerie shop and get a complimentary measurement. A bra that fits can change your entire look, so take a little time to find your best fit.

Complementing a Small Bust

  • If you have a small chest, slip on a dress or top with a sweetheart neckline which will result in your breasts appearing more shapely. Ladies with small breasts also do well with anything that has pleating, ruffles, or embellishments, to add volume to your frame up top. Slipping on a high-waist skirt or pant also adds curves and pulls attention upward, making your top half look instantly more shapely.

Complementing a Large Bust

  • If you have a larger chest and want to downplay it, look for monochromatic looks in solid colors which will draw attention away from the breasts. If monochromatic does not strike your fancy, slip on a darker color up top and a lighter color on bottom, which will help de-emphasize your chest. Embrace V-necks, which are universally flattering. The key to wearing a V-neck is to pick one that does not dip too far -- a slight dip is all you need.

Use Makeup

  • Makeup does not have to be just for your face. You can use a few clever makeup tricks to play up your breasts as well. A highlighter brushed just on the upper part of your breasts gives the look of more cleavage. Add extra oomph by applying a bit of bronzer in between your cleavage to give the illusion of more depth.
