How to Hang Starfish With Ribbon

Whether you are trying to bring a touch of the beach to your home for casual summertime decor or are trying to decorate for the holidays with nautical-inspired decor, starfish bring a touch of coastal style to any home. Hang starfish from ribbons for display around your home or even on a Christmas tree.

Choose the Right Ribbon

  • Before you start hanging starfish, decide what kind of of ribbon you would like to use. The ribbon can be as much a part of the decor as the starfish itself, and different types of ribbon are appropriate for different types of decor. For example, if you plan on making summertime decorations, use raffia or ribbon in a beach color such as pale blue or yellow. If you are planning on making Christmas ornaments from the starfish, use a festive red, green or gold ribbon. If you want the starfish to appear like they are floating, use fishing line instead of ribbon.

Tying the Ribbon

  • Decide how you want the finished decoration to look. If having ribbon tied around the starfish itself is acceptable, tightly tie the ribbon around one of the legs of the starfish. For a more secure hold, tie the ribbon around the middle of the starfish so it hangs with three legs above the ribbon. Consider dressing up the area the ribbon is attached to by tying a bow or hot gluing something small such as a seashell or a jingle bell to the ribbon.

Add a Picture Hanger

  • Ribbon or fishing line still can be used to hang the starfish without it being tied around the starfish's body. To achieve this look, hot glue a triangular hook to the starfish. If the starfish has thicker legs, the hanger can be glued behind a leg. If the starfish is smaller, glue the hook behind the middle of the starfish's body. When the glue is dry, thread a ribbon through the hook, and the starfish is ready to hang.

Using Starfish Decoration

  • Hang starfish from hooks on the bottom of a shelf to turn the shelf into a coastal feature. Vary the length of the ribbon to add visual interest. Varying ribbon length and hanging starfish from the wall with a large bow on the top of each ribbon creates a piece of featured wall art. Tie a ribbon with a starfish hanging from it to the blind pull, or make a nautical Christmas tree and hang starfish ornaments all over the tree.
