The date has been set, the wedding invitation arrived, and you absolutely must attend this marriage celebration. The question looms on your very masculine mind -- what do I wear? Weddings are typically formal affairs that require a guy to dress in his very best. Before your single-man mentality assumes that renting a tux is the only option, read through the invitation first to see whether it addresses attire. Does it say black-tie optional, formal or cowboy boots required? If not, look to the venue for a clue on the wedding style to make an appropriate fashion choice.

The Standard Suit

You just can’t go wrong in a traditional pinstriped or navy blue suit with a pop of color in your tie. All guys should have a custom-fitted suit in his closet that is a go-to for weddings and special occasions. A smart suit looks great at a traditional church ceremony or an outdoor venue.

Black-Tie Formal

A black-tie affair is the most luxurious and glamorous of wedding celebrations, usually held at five-star hotels or private country clubs. The invitation will definitely inform you if this manner of dress is required, or may indicate that it is optional. Black-tie can mean a tuxedo with a black bow tie or a tailored suit and necktie. Usually a tuxedo is reserved for the bridal party. A slim-fitted black or gray suit jacket, pressed trousers with a vest and skinny black tie will keep your look polished and well-groomed.

Outdoor Affair

If the wedding is being held in the family’s backyard or at another outdoor venue, the dress will be less formal and more relaxed. Pair crisp khaki trousers or seersucker pants with a white dress shirt, suspenders and a fun bow tie. Or swap the suspenders for a neutral fitted vest. A jacket isn’t required for an intimate outdoor wedding, but you may want to bring one along in case your "plus one" gets chilly under the stars.

June Weddings

June is traditionally the month for weddings, so wear clothes with a spring vibe. Look dapper and fashion-forward in a springtime suit in cream, khaki or light blue with a pastel colored tie in sage green, yellow print and even pink paisley. For a preppy look, pair a plaid shirt and navy blazer with light-colored trousers. Match your outfit to that of your date as practice for your own big day.

Theme Night

If and only if the invitation alerts you to a theme, like a cowboy-inspired ranch wedding or steam punk soiree, you may deviate from traditional menswear. Many brides encourage their guests to rock jeans and boots and sometimes even costumes, if that’s the event they’ve always dreamed of. Make sure that your fashion choices consist of quality garments to keep the ladies looking at you like a potential partner.
