Sunday School Activities About Gods' Covenants

Various activities can make learning about God's covenants an enjoyable time for kids in Sunday School. First, explain that a covenant is a promise made between two parties, in this case, God and his people. According to Eternal Word Television Network, "A good simple definition would be this: God says, in Covenant, 'I will be your God, you will be my People.' Use different activities each time to help facilitate the storytelling of different occasions when such promises were made.

Prepare coloring pages featuring rainbows for the little kids to work on while you tell the story of God's covenant with Noah after the great flood. Bigger kids who can handle crafts can make rainbow mobiles. Have them cut out cloud and rainbow shapes, color them, then glue the cloud shapes at each end of the rainbow. Tie it with a string for an instant colorful mobile. Emphasize the significance of the rainbow as the sign that God used to promise Noah that He will never again wipe out humanity.

Teach the children the lyrics and actions to the song "Father Abraham" to aid your storytelling of God's covenant with Abraham, in which God said He will make him the father of many nations. The song has only one verse that you sing over and over, doing different actions after each verse: right arm, left arm, right foot, left foot, chin up, turn around, sit down! "Father Abraham had many sons Many sons had Father Abraham I am one of them and so are you So let's all praise the Lord."

Provide wet wipes or water-filled basins for the children to wash their hands at the start of the lesson. Explain that in Exodus 19-20, God required the Israelites to cleanse and purify themselves, before he called Moses to the mountain to give his commandments. There, God made a covenant with Israel through Moses, saying, "You have seen for yourselves how I brought you (out of Egypt) here to myself. Therefore, if you hearken to my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be my special possession, dearer to me than all other people."

Ask the children to write letters to God, after each lesson or covenant story. Encourage them to thank the Lord for the many promises He has given his people, and for fulfilling those promises. Then, as if they were being promised by God his blessings personally, ask them to write their personal promises to God in return.
