Hiking is one of many adventures awaiting families in Keystone.

Keystone, Colorado is a winter wonderland welcoming skiers and snowboarders to 11,000-foot peaks. The resort area has also become a popular spot for people looking to escape the summer heat. As the snow melts, helping to replenish rivers and lakes, Keystone's resorts offer its visitors a panorama of blue skies and snow-capped mountain slopes. Nestled within a few miles of Dillon, Frisco and Breckenridge, Keystone offers locals and vacationers plenty of summer memories waiting to be made.

  1. Hit the Trails

    • Outdoor enthusiasts trade their winter skis for summer mountain bikes, trekking more than 100 miles of paved and single-track bike trails. Whether your family likes to challenge their lungs, pedaling to the top of Keystone Mountain or prefers riding the lift and gently gliding down easier terrain, Keystone offers mountain biking for all ages and levels. Some families prefer experiencing Keystone on horseback, while learning about the local history from a Keystone Ranger. While guided horseback outings require riders be aged 8 and older, younger kids can enjoy pony rides or attend free Wednesday campfire socials. If your kids would rather have two feet firmly planted on the ground, hiking abounds in the Keystone area. While Keystone’s Dercum Mountain offers both moderate and steep hikes, flatlanders might prefer strolling along one of the many paved trails leading to neighboring towns of Frisco and Breckenridge.

    Water Fun

    • Keystone features many boating opportunities. Adventure Center offers both paddle boat and canoe rentals, or you can choose from larger sailboats, pontoons and fishing boats, sailing across Dillon Reservoir. Spend a day casting for scrumptious Rocky Mountain trout, cooking the catch over an open campfire or travel on Dillon Reservoir’s water taxi, eating at one of two marina restaurants.

    Camps and Kid Events

    • Sending kids to summer camp takes on a whole new meaning in Keystone. Keystone Science School (keystonescienceschool.org) invites children from around the world to experience science in a 9,200-foot outdoor mountain lab. Kids learn about mountain ecosystems, as well as discovering wildlife, wildflowers and star-studded night skies. Lake Dillon Theatre Company (lakedillontheatre.org) offers aspiring kid actors, singers and dancers a venue to try out their crafts. Summer youth workshops are held for children of all ages and you will especially enjoy the culminating production featuring your drama king or queen.

    Miscellaneous

    • Don’t let the fact that it's 80 degrees outside stop your family from enjoying summer snow tubing at Adventure Point. Leave the layers behind, ride up the lift and close your eyes while imagining freshly fallen powder as your family glides down the remainder of snow left from Keystone’s snowy winter. Kidtopia Play Park combines myriad activities in one spot. Get the kids' wiggles out with jumping, sliding and dunking at the bounce house or by trampoline jumping. Experience a safe way to try rock climbing. Buckle the whole family in to safety harnesses and scale Keystone Resort's climbing wall.
