What Do the Male Parents Wear During a Middle School Graduation? thumbnail
Graduates often receive flowers immediately following the ceremony.

Men have a variety of clothing options when it comes to attending a middle school graduation ceremony. However, as the father of a graduate, it's best to be well dressed. Your child has accomplished much, learned great lessons and is ready to move on to the next exciting phase. Since you are likely his support system and biggest cheerleader, it's fitting to acknowledge the occasion's importance by dressing in proper attire. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Suit and Tie

    • A suit and tie is always acceptable. A gray suit with a white shirt and a dark-colored tie is perfect for a day or night graduation and says you take this momentous occasion seriously. Choose a contemporary suit that makes you look pulled together and feel confident. Ditch the pinstripes and aggressive plaids and, instead, focus on fit and detailed style. The most relevant suits hug your shoulders, have a slim-looking lapel and a two-button jacket. Suit pants should hit the tops of your shoes in the front and the tops of your heels in the back.

    Sport Coat and Slacks

    • Dressing down a notch from the suit and tie is a nice blazer or sport coat paired with slacks. Choose a corduroy or tweed sport coat in slate, chocolate or navy. Cotton twill pants, such as traditional chinos or khakis, should have a flat front and be tailored well so that the side seams hang perpendicular to the floor. Nice dress slacks also pair well with sport coats and blazers. Look for thin wool trousers, in a neutral color and a slim fit, that not only feel comfortable, but look good without pulling or puckering when you walk.

    Oxford and Tie

    • If you feel the graduation doesn't warrant a coat, skip straight to the dress shirt and tie. Solid-colored Oxfords look best in light and french blue, stark white and pink, creams and yellow, and a soft lavender hue. A striped shirt is also nice, but just make sure it doesn't clash with your tie pattern or pant stripes. Choose either a bow or neck tie that is the right proportion to your body. Also, keep in mind that men with fair skin and light hair look best in pastel and monochromatic color combinations, while dark-haired and darker-skinned males look good when mixing high- and low-contrast colors.

    Smart-Casual

    • The most casual you can go to a middle school graduation ceremony is in business-casual dress. While jeans are not acceptable, you can still pair a nicely pressed chino or khaki pant with a cardigan sweater and Oxford shirt. Wear a textured sweater in a rich, jewel-tone hue, such as crimson, navy or hunter. A crisp, white Oxford with a spread collar looks nice when tucked in and worn with a braided leather belt, for example. This outfit only works well if you match your belt color to you shoes. The best shoe options that complement this look include round-toed, rubber-soled bucks, wing tips, or a slip-on or lace-up loafer with a square toe.
