Fort Campbell, which is situated on the Tennessee-Kentucky border, is a U.S. Army post and home to many military families. Whether you call Fort Campbell or a surrounding community home or are planning a trip to the area with your children, you'll find many activities for kids.

  1. Rainy-day Activities

    • Don't let a rainy Kentucky day keep you and your children stuck inside. Let them run and play at Kids-N-Play (kidsnplay.com), 15 minutes away in Clarksville. You'll find a towering three-level play system, complete with an obstacle course and slides, a cannon blaster area, games and a toddler area, where little ones can play safely. You could also take your family for some bowling at Pinnacle Bowl (pinnaclebowl.com), also in Clarksville. Youth league programs also are available during the summer months.

    Outdoor Fun

    • Enjoy the outdoors with your children at the Dunbar Cave State Park (no website; 401 Old Dunbar Cave Road, Clarksville; 931-648-5526), a 15-minute drive away, near Clarksville. Inside the park, take your kids hiking on the trails, do some fishing or have a picnic. Check out some of the events that take place throughout the year, such as the Spring Fling, with free nature programs and hikes. Or, cool off on a hot summer day at Tie Breaker Family Aquatic Center (tiebreakerpark.com), 20 minutes away in Hopkinsville. Your family can float on a tube down the lazy river or your children can play and spray on the water playground, packed full of spray features. You'll also find an assortment of water slides and a playground with giant foam blocks that encourage kids to build and use their imaginations.

    Educational Opportunities

    • Take your children for a visit to the Don F. Pratt Museum (no website; Tennessee Avenue, Fort Campbell; 931-431-2003) to soak up some history. As you walk through this museum, dedicated to the 101st Airborne Division, you'll see memorabilia from Gen. Don F. Pratt, as well a CG-4A cargo glider, a recruiters Jeep from the 1970s and other memorabilia all the way back from the 1940s to present day. Or, make the 15-minute drive to Clarksville, where you can take your children to the Customs House Museum and Cultural Center (customshousemuseum.org). Kids can learn about the science of bubbles and blow some of their own in the Bubble Cave or you can check out the other exhibits in the Explorer's Gallery, like Raceways, a kids pretend market and the play kitchen. Your family can also participate in special programs, such as Sunday Family Fun, with arts and crafts.

    Children's Classes
