Spring and summer fashion is all about light fabrics and tones.

With the return of green leaves and colorful foliage, fashion takes on a lighter, brighter look. Men's looks drop the wintry browns, blacks and charcoals, populated instead by pastel hues, whites and khakis. Women don skirts and lighter-weight fabrics. Shoe trends for men and women also follow suit, creating a head-to-toe spring and summer clothing concept with a freshness that embraces the warmer seasons. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. At the Office

    • Regardless of the time of year, you still have to pay attention to work wear. Suits for both men and women take on lighter hues, accentuated by shirts and accessories with bright punches of color. Opting for a light gray color is more seasonal and less heavy in appearance than a dark-colored suit. Gray remains conservative, and its neutral nature teams well with virtually any shirt or tie. Lighter neutral colors lend themselves well to brighter, offsetting shirt colors and shoes for women.

    Shoes

    • Warm weather isn't all flip-flops and sandals. Whether at the office or on the deck, loafers, canvas and leather sneakers -- preferably without socks -- are a fashionable and more universally appropriate alternative. Sneakers in white or gray and without colorful decoration may even be worn in certain business-casual environments. Leather slip-ons such as loafers and women's flats continue to offer a nice degree of polish, while feeling a little lighter as temperatures rise.

    Pastels

    • Following the theme of lighter-toned suits, chalky pastels are perfect for men and women in warmer climes. Light-toned slacks in tan and gray -- and even some jeans -- replace the standard blacks and dark blues worn during the rest of the year, adding a little variety and seasonal flavor. Greens, reds, pinks and blues bring any look into sharp focus, and can be blended with more traditional pieces like navy blazers. Polka-dots and bright prints to add a little panache to the look.

    Belts and Accessories

    • Replacing traditional men's leather belts -- even with suits -- for spring and summer are solid or striped D-ring belts. Multiple options are available, ranging from woven leather, grosgrain or fabric. Thinner leather women's belts in bright colors like pink, lime green and yellow are subtle and classic styles, working well at the office or at a cocktail party. Maintaining their classic status, squared wayfarer-style sunglasses remain a staple with any outfit. Aviator sunglasses offer a classic unisex look that never seems to go out of style. Men can boost the look of any suit with colorful pocket squares, featuring more than one color border. Women can make their looks pop even more through colorful brooches, earrings or necklaces.
