Men's Fashion at the Oscars
It’s not just the glitzy dresses at the Oscar ceremony that catch the paparazzi’s flash -- leading men rack up as many photo ops as the ladies. From George Clooney to Bradley Cooper, Hollywood’s most dapper dandies sport the latest designer trends at the traditionally black-tie affair. Though classic tuxedos are usually the go-to garment for A-listers, velvet jackets and colorful suits can also make an appearance on the red carpet. Does this Spark an idea?

Single-Breasted
-
One classic piece of dinner attire -- perfect for showcasing a svelte male physique -- is the single-breasted tuxedo. French actor Jean Dujardin and Brit Eddie Redmayne are among the many men who flock toward this silhouette. The jacket’s narrow-cut shoulders and slender satin lapels help visually slim down a man’s frame. Add the narrower cut European-style trouser, and you have an outfit of whippet-esque proportions. Those who want a more relaxed look can wear the ensemble sans tie. Others can choose to coordinate a matching satin vest, crisp shirt, and straight or bow tie.
Double-Breasted
-
Those looking to take more of a 1940s approach to formal dressing can don a double-breasted tuxedo. This homage to Old Hollywood tips a gentlemanly hat to film legends such as Humphrey Bogart and Marlon Brando. Hugh Jackman, Ben Affleck and other contemporary leading men have recently sported this fashion at the Academy Awards, often accompanied with tapered tuxedo pants, wingtips and the ever-fashionable bow tie. As with many other sophisticated suits, a starched white shirt can be a great finishing touch.

Velvet Jacket
-
Those seeking to make a statement can opt for a velvet jacket. This eye-catching jacket has been sported by the likes of Samuel L. Jackson, who wore one in deep crimson, accompanied by a pair of chocolate brown tuxedo trousers. Traditionally, there are two types of velvet jackets: the dinner jacket and the smoking jacket. The dinner jacket features a more straightforward notched collar, while the smoking jacket boasts a relaxed shawl collar. Both outer garments can be seen at the Oscars accompanied by the classic tuxedo accoutrements: wool slacks, crisp shirt and a bow tie.
Colorful Dinner Suit
-
For some actors, black is not the way to go. Those who are not faint of heart can choose to make a fashion statement with a splash of color. At the Oscars, the hues tend to be muted jewel tones such as deep sapphire or burgundy. Fashion rebels like Daniel Day-Lewis and Gael Garcia Bernal have dared to be seen in blue on the red carpet. These single-breasted designer threads are often fabricated out of fine worsted wool, and feature a slender satin notched collar. This look can be worn with a black shirt and matching '60s-inspired slender tie, or with the classic bow tie and white shirt combination.
