The universally acknowledged capital of hipsterdom is Brooklyn, New York. From Williamsburg to Bed Stuy, hipsters have inundated the borough, colonizing neighborhoods with gourmet coffee shops and artisanal cupcake emporia. While few men self-identify as hipsters and the exact definition of the term is maddeningly elusive -- it has its antecedents in the 1940s, but the hipster of yesterday little resembles his modern-day counterpart -- there are a number of identifiable fashion trends among hip young Brooklyn males. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Flannel Shirt and Skinny Jeans

    • While ironic T-shirts were once the hipster man's top of choice, as the hipster has aged, so has his taste in clothes. The classic combination for male Brooklyn hipsters is the flannel shirt matched with skinny jeans. This combo is not only wearable in most weather conditions, but it's both dress-up and dress-down, allowing the wearer to look at home in a range of venues. While the exact tightness of the jeans can range from skinny to skin-tight, hipsters avoid baggy jeans like they do conservative politics.

    Shoes

    • Hipster men have a lot of latitude in footwear. Styles can range from expensive, stylish dress shoes to beat-to-hell Converse All-Stars. Hipster footwear fashion might actually be best defined by which shoes are prohibited -- functional athletic shoes. While vintage and throwback athletic footwear are acceptable, as are certain kinds of soccer shoes, the latest basketball shoes and cross-trainers are frowned upon. However, shoes for skateboarding are acceptable if they're of a piece with the rest of the outfit

    Fedoras

    • In the early 2000s, the trucker hat was all the rage. Now, trucker hats are few and far between. Just as the hipster has upgraded form the ironic T-shirt, so, too, has he grown into a grown-man's hat -- the fedora. The exact model of fedora varies, but the brim is generally relatively short, with Indiana Jones-length fedoras exceptionally rare. While other vintage hats are acceptable in certain situations, especially the Trilby and the classic bowler, the fedora is the reigning king of hipster headwear.

    Glasses

    • The chief characteristic of Brooklyn men's glasses is their conspicuousness. Glasses confer on their wearer a sense of literacy and intellectualism -- qualities prized among the hipster. So, instead of trying to minimize their presence through thin wire rims, hipster men play up their poor eyesight with thick plastic frames. Tortoiseshell and black are especially popular colors. The company Warby Parker is the Brooklyn hipster's eyeglass purveyor of choice, offering a number of showy models.
