What Is the Microsoft LifeCam Dashboard?

The Microsoft LifeCam not only enables you to record videos and use the device with video chatting services, but also edit videos taken with the webcam. Microsoft LifeCam Dashboard is a video-editing suite that enables you to add special effects, as well as lighten or darken videos -- all without having to purchase or use a third-party application. You can also add effects and editing to photos taken with your Microsoft LifeCam webcam.

  • Microsoft LifeCam Dashboard requires a Microsoft LifeCam Studio, HD-6000 Notebooks, HD-5000, HD-5001, HD-3000 or Microsoft LifeCam Cinema webcam. The video-editing application is not compatible with other webcams, and does not work on non-Windows systems. LifeCam Dashboard is compatible with Windows 8 and 7. The Windows 8 version installs directly without your interaction, while the Windows 7 version includes a wizard that walks you through the installation.

TrueColor Technology

  • Microsoft LifeCam Dashboard contains TrueColor Technology that works hand-in-hand with your LifeCam webcam to boost your video's color and brightness setting in any lighting condition. The TrueColor Technology also enhances photos taken with your webcam. The technology is ideal for videos and photos taken in a dark room or an area with little lighting.

  • To launch the video-editing application, click the arrow on the right side of your LifeCam webcam's window. The LifeCam Dashboard opens and a series of tabs appear across the top of the Dashboard. The Effects tab includes graphic and animated effects -- simply click on the effect you want to add to your video or photo, and the effect is applied immediately. The Settings tab includes controls for changing your LifeCam webcam's properties, adjusting image resolution, visiting the Microsoft Hardware website for LifeCam software updates, and selecting different LifeCam webcams if you have more than one connected to your computer.

  • To download the latest version of Microsoft LifeCam Dashboard, double-click "Store" on the Start screen, and then move your cursor to the right side of the screen to access Windows 8's main menu. Click "Search," enter "Microsoft LifeCam Dashboard" in the search box, scroll down the list of search options, and then click on "Store." Double-click "LifeCam Dashboard," and then click the "Install" button. The application installs and places a shortcut on your Start screen.
