Utility bills are a constant expense when running a household. Alhough there may be times when bills go up based on usage, the weather or other factors; the majority of utility charges stay roughly the same every billing cycle. When you receive a water bill that seems outrageously high, take immediate steps to prevent a recurrence.
Verify the Reading is Correct
Begin by calling the water company to confirm the bill is accurate. Have your bill in your hand when you call to provide the representative with your address, meter number and the usage amounts listed on the bill. Verify that the correct meter was read or used in calculating your bill. It is possible that your account number was linked to the wrong meter, which could explain a high bill.
Check for Leaks
Leaky plumbing can cause outrageous water bills that you only become aware of when you receive the bill. Check all faucets, plumbing connections and water access points for dampness, pooling water or water damage. Leaks should be repaired immediately to prevent further water loss, high bills and damage.
Request a Credit for Leaks
The water company can adjust a water bill that is high because of a faulty meter. Some utility companies issue credits for leaks that have been repaired. This one-time credit is a partial credit that offsets some of the charges racked up due to water leaks. You may need to provide proof that all repair work has been completed to receive such a leak credit.
Set Up a Payment Plan
In cases where the water bill and usage is correct, you have to pay the bill. Call the water company and explain the situation. Ask if the company can spread the bill over several months. This is a last resort when all other options have been exhausted.
