What Is an IPB image?

When browsing forums on the Internet, you might sometimes notice an enigmatic "IPB image" message inserted into posts. This error message only appears on Internet message boards that have been created by using Invision Power Board, also called IP.Board or IPB.

  1. IPB

    • IPB is a commercial message board application that allows webmasters to conveniently integrate forums into an existing website. IPB has many features, among which is the ability for registered users of a forum to insert images into their posts. When inserting images into a post, users can either select between pasting the URL of an image hosted on a different website or upload the picture to the board's server.

    IPB Image

    • When an IPB-powered message board cannot display a picture embedded in a post, it instead displays an "IPB image" placeholder. This placeholder allows the board's users to see that an image has been inserted into the post even if IPB is not able to correctly display it.

    Causes

    • There are several different causes which can prevent an IPB board from being able to display an image. In the case of images hosted on a different server, the poster may have referenced an image which has since been deleted from the server or he may have incorrectly typed the image's URL address. If the image was uploaded to the IPB server, an error might have occurred during the transfer. Alternatively, IP.Board might be unable to access the folder in which posted images are stored, for example if the board's administrator has accidentally moved or deleted it.

    Resolution

    • If you are the board's administrator and if all images on your IPB board cannot be loaded, you might want to check your image folder settings. You can check those settings from within your IPB control panel. Make sure that the folder's path is correctly set. Alternatively, if you are a regular poster or if the "IPB image" placeholder is displayed for only a single picture, you might want to try uploading the picture again. If you have linked to a picture that is hosted on a different server, make sure that you have correctly typed the URL address and that the image still exists on the original website.
