For those individuals who want to use a different scanner, The Neat Company offers NeatWorks for Mac as a standalone software product, which can be used with various compatible scanners. No comparable software product is offered for Windows PC users who wish to use other scanners as of early 2012.
NeatWorks for Mac
NeatWorks for Mac is the software-only version of NeatReceipts. This product is ideal for people or organizations that want to organize their documents but who already have scanners. You must use a NeatWorks-compatible scanner, then install the NeatWorks software on your Mac computer.
Items to Scan
NeatWorks users can use the software to digitally scan and file a wide range of personal and business documents. Typically, users scan receipts, business cards, home, tax and medical documents.
The Neat Company has tested several third-party scanners to identify their compatibility with the NeatWorks for Mac program. As of 2012, the list of company-tested and supported scanners include HP OfficeJet J6480, Canon Pixma MP480 and Pixma MX310 and several Fujitsu ScanSnap models. A complete list can be found on the Neat website, along with a list of scanners verified by their manufacturers -- but not yet tested by The Neat Company -- to work with the software, including select models from HP and Fujitsu.
How it Works
After you’ve purchased the NeatWorks for Mac software and a compatible scanner, install the software on your computer and begin scanning documents. Open the Quick Scan Center and indicate the document type you’re scanning, color options, and scan options. Determine whether you want to scan your document to a PDF or scan it to your Inbox. Click the appropriate option to begin your scan. Place a document in your Inbox if you want to make edits to it or comment on it before you add it to a NeatWorks for Mac folder.
When you scan your document, NeatWorks for Mac turns the document into a PDF, extracts important information and stores the details in a searchable database. NeatWorks uses the contents of your scans to create tax documents for your accountant, expense reports for your business or a list of personal or professional contacts. As of 2012, you can export the documents you scan into Microsoft Excel, Quicken and TurboTax.
