Specifications of the Black Max Powered by Honda Riding Mowers

The Honda Black Max power-riding mower has a spotty presence in North America, although it can be found at some discount warehouse outlets. Only one model was available in 2012: the Black Max riding mower with a 46-inch cutting blade. The Black Max is not a full Honda riding mower, but assembled by Husqvarna Outdoor Products and powered with a Honda engine.

  • Honda produced power self-propelled mowers, rider garden tractors and four-wheel drive utility tractors from the 1980s to about 2000 before largely abandoning the North American market to focus on Europe. Over an approximately 15-year period, Honda manufactured about 14 garden tractors, including the H, HA, HT and RT series mowers. An early model was the 1987 Honda HT4213 powered by a 13-horsepower 358 cc engine and riding on a 45.7-inch wheelbase. The Honda H4518 model produced from 1991 to 1998 came closest to the contemporary Black Max version with an 18-horsepower 634 cc engine. It featured a 46.9-inch wheelbase. Power mowers are a small portion of Honda’s current Black Max products. Although Honda still markets a small quantity of mowers in North America, the main Black Max line of products features pressure washers and electric generators. Husqvarna, a manufacturer of power and garden equipment, sells and services the Honda Black Max.

Black Max Power

  • The Black Max 46-inch blade riding mower features a 530 cc Honda engine matched with a foot pedal-operated Hydro Gear Hydrostatic Transaxle to transmit power to the wheels. The Black Max delivers 16 horsepower. Its sibling is the Honda HF 2620 HT equipped with a 48-inch cutting blade and 614 cc engine. The HF series tractors are sold only in Europe, where Black Max versions are not available. Along with the riding mower, the Black Max 22-inch self-propelled non-riding mower was available in North America in 2012.

Black Max Dimensions

  • The Black Max comes with a 15-inch padded seat and a 46-inch twin blade deck with a 48.5-inch cutting path. It measures 75 inches long, 56 inches wide and 42.5 inches tall with the deflector lifted. The front tires are 15 inches and the rear tires are 18 inches. In contrast, the slightly larger, but similarly powered, HF 2620 HT in the United Kingdom is 97.6 inches long, 49.6 inches wide and 44.1 inches tall. Yet its full cutting width is a half-inch narrower than that of the Black Max.

  • Features on the Black Max riding mower include a cup holder, tool box, cast iron axle, gauge wheels, brush guard, padded steering wheel and a dashboard-mounted blade lever. The grass bag is optional, although the British versions have a grass bag as standard equipment. Both models have a mulching system and electric key starter.
