My Print Spooler Crashes Before Login
The print spooler loads documents and files into memory for printing. The spooler is controlled by the print spooler service of Windows computers and is set to automatically start by default. If the print spooler crashes before you login, your documents fail to print. To fix a print spooler crash and print your documents, use the following troubleshooting steps.
-
Restart Printer Spooler Service
-
The printer spooler service may have simply stopped unexpectedly. To fix the spooler crash, restart the print spooler service. Click the “Start” button, select “Control Panel,” select “System and Maintenance” and click “Administrative Tools.” Double-click “Services.” Right-click the “Printer Spooler” service and click “Properties.” Click “Start” under “Service Status” and click “OK.”
Power Cycle Printer
-
Resetting the printer connection often resolves a print spooler that keeps crashing. Power off the printer, wait 2-3 minutes and then power the printer back on.
-
Remove the Printer
-
A corrupt printer driver can cause the print spooler to crash before you login. To remove the printer driver, click the “Start” button and select “Devices and Printers” from the Start menu. Right-click the printer and click “Remove Device.”
Add the Printer
-
To fix the corrupt print spooler, reinstall the printer driver. Click the “Start” button and then click “Devices and Printers.” Click “Add a Printer.” The Add a Printer wizard launches. Click “Add a Local Printer.” Select “Use an existing port” from the “Choose a printer port” page. Select the printer manufacturer and model from the “Install the printer driver” page and click “Next.” Click “Finish” to complete the install.
