Can You Get Into a Google Group Via Pingback?
A Google Group allows several users to communicate with each other on the Internet using a Google-sponsored mailing list. A pingback is a function of Web design software that allows a website author to receive information whenever someone accesses their site via a link from another site. You can't get into a Google Group using pingback.

Google claims that their Google Groups service offers larger storage limits and better management features than other free online mailing list services. To enter a Google Group, send them an email using the address "(groupname)+subscribe@googlegroups.com. You may also subscribe by entering your Google account and clicking the "Join this group" link under "About this group" on the right side of the page or start a new group by clicking on the "Create a group..." button on the Google Groups homepage.

A ping sends four packets of information from a computer to another device on either the Internet or within a local area network. You must type a ping request into the command prompt of your computer's operating system. For Windows 7, type "cmd" into the search field on the Start menu and then press "Enter." Type "ping" without quotes, a space, the host name of the target device and then press "Enter." You may also use the numerical IP address. If the device is available, it returns basic information showing speed and quality of the connection.

A pingback must be programmed into sites in the Web design software. A pingback tells the site owner that someone has entered the site by clicking on a link while visiting another site. The original site and the other site must have pingback programmed in their design. If someone sends you a link in an email and you click on it to enter a site, the site owner will not receive any pingback information. Pingbacks do not allow entry into Google Groups or any other site.
