What Is Cut Through Paging for AT&T Wireless Voice Mail?

Save

AT&T Wireless offers customers either a standard or enhanced voice mail service, depending on the calling plan they purchase. However, both voice mail services feature cut through paging. This feature lets callers bypass your voice mail’s recorded message and send you a text message with a callback phone number. As an standard voice mail feature, there is no additional charge to activate or use this feature.

About

  • When you call an AT&T Wireless customer and the call connects to voice mail, you have the option of interrupting the recorded voice message or voice mail instructions and sending a text message with a callback number to the AT&T customer. AT&T no longer provides callers with instructions for using this feature, but callers can activate the cut through paging feature by pressing “5” at any time after connecting to the voice mail system.

Using the Feature

  • After pressing “5,” callers hear a prompt to enter a callback phone number. Enter the full 10-digit phone number including the area code you would like to leave as a text message for the call recipient. The voice mail system plays back the phone number inputted into the phone. Pressing “1” confirms the phone number entered is correct and pressing "2" lets you change the phone number entered. The voice mail system prompts you to hang up after confirming the number is correct.

Receiving Cut Through Page

  • Call recipients instantly receive the cut through page as a text message on their AT&T Wireless phone. AT&T doesn't impose any additional charge for retrieving this type of text message. However, to receive the text message, the AT&T customer needs to power on his phone and make sure the phone has the capability to receive text messages. If the customer’s phone is off when you leave the cut through page message, the call recipient will receive the message after powering the phone on.

Advantages

  • If you're calling an AT&T Wireless customer from another cellular phone, using the cut through paging feature lets you save minutes and spares you the recorded voice message or voice mail instructions. Additionally, texting a call back number typically takes less time than leaving a detailed voice message. The downside is that the recipient won't know if the call is urgent or not.
