What Is the LightScribe Template Labeler?
LightScribe Template Labeler is innovative software that uses a disc burner to create laser cut designs on the surface of the CD or DVD, making labels that distinguish one disc from another. The process involves an entire system that includes a specialized burner, media and software package.

Technology
-
Many programs, such as Microsoft Word or Photoshop, create labels for discs that print one on a sheet of paper using a standard printer. You fold the sheet to the right size and then tuck it into the disc case. Lightscribe works a little differently. It uses laser technology to burn media into the surface of the disc. Lasers work with a monochromatic, focused wave of light that is able to cut a design into the media that covers the disc. No printer ink is involved in the process. The software provides a template design or sample of a label. You take that sample and customize it for the disc you are labeling.
Process
-
Lightscribe uses laser technology to create an image. The disc you use has a coating on the "up" side. This is the side that faces the ceiling when you set the disc into the burner. The software uses the same laser beam that burns the audio or video file to paint a label on the disc. The beam moves in a concentric circle around the disc, starting from the outside going in towards the center. As it moves, it burns in an image using the coating as media.

Requirements
-
Lightscribe will not work with a standard DVD or CD burner. The unit must be compatible with the Lightscribe software. Devices capable of burning labels will have the Lightscribe logo on the casing. The process requires specially-treated discs as well, with the coating on them that the laser uses to create the label. The software uses an interface that allows you to control the burning process and create your label design.
Download
-
The software is free of charge and available for download from the manufacturers website. The download provides not only the interface for the burning process, but a driver for the burner. A driver provides instructions to the operating system for burner operation. The software works on Windows, Mac OS and Linux operating systems. When downloading, pick an application compatible with your operating system. The company lists no specific hardware requirements other than the burner for LightScribe.
