Apple's line of laptop computers, consisting of the MacBook Pro and the MacBook Air, offers native support for external speakers and headphones using a standard size connector. An external audio device that doesn't have a standard size connector requires a third-party adapter to function properly with either MacBook model.

  1. Basics

    • Both MacBook styles feature a headphone jack, also known as a minijack, on the side of the laptop. The minijack accepts a standard 3.5-mm headphone plug. This is the most common plug size associated with computers, smartphones, digital music players and other audio devices. The MacBook Pro also offers an audio input option via a separate port of the same size.

    Speakers

    • The MacBook line of portable computers supports any type of external speakers that can fit a standard minijack. Although each MacBook offers built-in speakers, external speakers can be a viable option to play audio at a higher volume with added clarity. Often audio may sound muffled from built-in laptop speakers due to the surface the device is placed on or your arms or hands resting on top of the speaker's location.

    Avoiding

    • If you're planning to play your MacBook's audio for a group of people, it may be best to avoid external computer speakers altogether. Connect your stereo or surround sound system to your MacBook's headphone port and use your existing home setup to add an additional level of volume and clarity to your digital media.

    Adapters

    • Not all external speakers use standard 3.5-mm jacks. Various plug sizes are used for audio equipment, including 2.5 mm and 6.35 mm (1/4 inch). In these cases, place an adapter over the original connector that features a 3.5-mm jack on the opposite side. An adapter is universal and allows you to use external speakers, headphones or other equipment with your MacBook that lacks a native 3.5-mm plug.
