How Secure Is Comcast?
Comcast Corporation offers an ultra-fast broadband service that, unlike competitor plans, comes with a bevy of integrated network security tools and applications. While most broadband providers only give their customers a modem, Comcast provides a modem along with Constant Guard and XFINITY Connect -- both of which greatly enhance network security. There are also additional steps you can take to ensure you're secure on Comcast's broadband network.
-
Constant Guard
-
The Constant Guard software suite from Comcast includes Norton Security Suite for defending against viruses and IDENTITY GUARD for warding off identity attacks; both are well-recognized security suites. Norton Security Suite blocks browser and operating system threats, monitors your home network and protects against bots, Trojan horses, spyware and viruses. IDENTITY GUARD monitors your credit report and submits alerts to your email whenever suspicious activity occurs.
XFINITY Connect
-
The XFINITY Connect solution features seven secured email accounts with 10 GB of storage. You can log in to XFINITY and listen to your voicemail from your computer, forward messages to others and prepare an online address book. This free security feature from Comcast prevents you from having to set up an email account through a less secure client, such as Gmail, Yahoo Mail or Hotmail.
-
Operational Security
-
Though Comcast's integrated network security solutions give you a step up against potential threats, be proactive by setting up your own line of defense. Start by creating long and challenging passwords that contain a mixture of letters and numbers. Also, keep your operating system updated with the latest security patches, schedule regular data backups to protect your most vital files and invest in a dedicated antivirus software to complement Norton Security Suite.
Additional Steps
-
Disconnect from the Internet whenever you aren't using it. Prior to logging back on to the Internet, disable fragile network services like print and file sharing. Also, utilize a third-party network security assessment tool like Nessus or Nmap to determine whether any potential vulnerabilities exist. And no matter what, avoid illegal activities like the peer-to-peer file sharing of bootlegged films at all costs, as they will expose you additional threats.
