Compaq 6710B SD Reader Missing

The Compaq 6710b is a notebook computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo processor, Intel GMA X3100 graphics adapter and 15.4-inch screen. The 6710b has a built-in card reader that allows you to transfer files via SD cards to mobile devices such as digital cameras. When you insert an SD card, Windows Explorer should display it on the "Computer" screen as a removable storage device. If it doesn't, you may not have installed the device driver.

  1. Device Driver

    • The Compaq 6710b ships with all required device drivers installed. However, if you have installed or upgraded Windows without using the recovery partition on the hard drive -- or installed a new hard drive without a recovery partition -- the device driver for the card reader will not be present and Windows will not detect inserted memory cards. You can obtain the device driver for the card reader from the HP support website.

    Internal Problem

    • The card reader of the Compaq 6710b connects to the system board internally via a small cable. If you noticed that the card reader stopped working after you dropped or bumped the computer, the cable may be disconnected. Reconnecting the cable requires removing the computer's hard drive, memory cover, CD/DVD drive, keyboard, switch cover and screen in addition to the top half of the body. If you are uncomfortable performing this procedure, hire a technician.

    Using the Card Reader

    • To use the Compaq 6710b card reader, insert an SD card with the label facing up and the metal teeth facing the inside of the reader. Press gently until the card clicks. If the computer's speakers are turned on, you will hear a tone when Windows detects the card. Open the Start menu, click "Computer" and double-click the icon for the SD card to view its contents. You can then transfer files to and from the card as you would other storage devices. When you are done using the SD card, right-click the icon and select "Eject" on the menu. Push the card to release it from the reader.

    Confirming Functionality

    • If the device driver is properly installed, you can confirm that the card reader in your Compaq 6710b functions properly using the Device Manager. After selecting the "Device Manager" icon on the Control Panel, click the "Universal Serial Bus Controllers" heading to see the entry for the card reader. Right-click it and select "Properties" to check the status. The window should say "This device is working properly."
