How to Care for a Tuxedo

Tuxedos require specialized care.

Most men buy tuxedos for specific formal occasions and then forget about them once the occasion is over. But tuxedos are delicate garments that can be easily destroyed without proper care. Because they are expensive, improper storage and cleaning can cost you lots of money in repairs and replacements. Tuxedo care is neither difficult nor time consuming and only requires a small amount of advanced planning.

Cleaning

Tuxedos should never be washed in a machine or by hand. Instead, after you wear your tuxedo and before you store it, take it to a dry cleaner with experience in cleaning formal attire. Your tuxedo will return to you clean and fully pressed, ready to wear again.

Storage

Tuxedos should be stored hanging in an airtight suit bag. This prevents moisture from destroying them over time and also ensures that your tuxedo will not be torn or wrinkled when you wear it next.

Pest Prevention

Moths are your biggest enemy if you're storing your suit long term. These insects can invade the tiniest of spaces and chew your suit to shreds before you even notice. Cedar balls are safer choices than moth balls. Cedar also prevents mildew and mold from damaging your suit.

Care While Wearing

If you spill something on your suit while wearing it, avoid trying to rinse the affected area. Instead, try using a stain removal stick that is safe for dry clean-only clothing. Lint, dog hair and even dust are easily removed using a lint roller. If your tuxedo smells like smoke or mildew, spray it with an odor removal spray safe for garments. Spot test a small area prior to spraying the entire suit.
