Svchost.exe Stopped & There's No Sound

Svchost.exe is an integral part of the Windows operating system that acts as the service host and provides support to other programs and services on your computer. It will launch as soon as Windows starts up and may run multiple instances at the same time to handle multiple program requests. If Svchost.exe crashes and your computer is left with no sound, the software or drivers that run your sound-card hardware require troubleshooting.

  1. Remove Malware

    • When system files, such as Svchost.exe, begin to display issues, first ensure that there is not a virus or other malware causing the problem. Update your virus scanning software to the newest version. Reboot your computer into Safe Mode and disconnect your computer from the Internet before scanning. Run a quick scan using your virus software and remove any threats to your computer. If your computer is highly infected based on the quick scan, run a full scan to ensure all threats are removed before rebooting to normal mode.

    Fix System Files

    • Due to infection or to software issues, Windows system files may become corrupted over time, which can result in Svchost.exe crashes. Windows has a built-in tool that will scan and fix system file errors as it detects them. Click the Start button on your task bar and type “cmd” in the search box. Right-click the “Command Prompt” search result and choose “Run as administrator” to launch the Command Prompt window. Type “sfc /scannow” at the command prompt and press the “Enter” key to launch the Windows system file scan and repair.

    Reinstall Sound Driver

    • Svchost.exe crashes may also be related to a corrupt or incorrect sound-card driver. Launch the Device Manager on your computer and determine the model and brand of sound card installed on your computer. Download and install the newest driver software for your sound card from the card manufacturer’s website. Once this procedure is complete, reboot your computer to determine if it fixed the issue.

    Windows System Restore

    • If you installed new software or hardware in your computer just before the Svchost.exe crashes began, you can use the Windows System Restore to roll your computer back to a previously working configuration. Launch the Start menu from the task bar, type “System Restore” and press the “Enter” key to launch the tool. Select “Recommended Restore” from the restore options or choose a specific restore point from the list. Allow the program to roll back the system files and software configurations on your computer to address the crashing and sound issues.
