Firefox Sync Duplicates

Firefox’s sync feature automatically synchronizes your bookmarks and other browser data across your computers when it’s enabled. Problems with Firefox sync can result in duplicate bookmarks appearing on your computers. You can automatically remove any duplicates with an add-on and prevent them from reappearing by resetting Firefox sync, updating Firefox and removing any conflicting add-ons.

  1. Automatically Remove Duplicates

    • If you’ve set up Firefox sync on different computers with the same bookmarks and Firefox sync has created duplicate copies of them, you can use a free add-on to automatically detect and remove the duplicate bookmarks. Click the Firefox menu, select “Add-ons” and search for “CheckPlaces.” After installing the CheckPlaces add-on, you can restart Firefox, click the “Firefox” menu, point to “Bookmarks” and select “CheckPlaces” and use the add-on to automatically detect and remove duplicate bookmarks.

    Reset Firefox Sync

    • If duplicate bookmarks keep appearing, even after you’ve removed them, you can reset your Firefox sync data. Click the “Firefox” menu button, select “Options” and click the “Sync” icon. Click the “Manage Account” menu and select “My Recovery Key.” Use the “Generate Recovery Key” link to generate a new recovery key; print it, save it to a file or write it down; and click "Change Recovery Key." On your other computers, remove all your bookmarks and enter the new recovery key. Your other computers will automatically download the bookmarks from the first computer and not try to create any duplicates.

    Update Firefox

    • Outdated versions of Firefox can cause problems when syncing with more recent versions. See that Firefox is up-to-date on all your computers by clicking the “Firefox” button, pointing to “Help” and selecting “About Firefox.” You’ll see a message saying that Firefox is up-to-date, or a button that you can click to update Firefox.

    Firefox Sync Add-On

    • Firefox sync has been built into Firefox since version 4.0. If you still have the Firefox sync add-on required for Firefox 3.6 and below, it can cause problems with Firefox sync. Click the “Firefox” button, select “Add-ons” and click “Extensions” to view your installed extensions. Click the “Remove” button to the right of the Firefox Sync extension if you see it listed, and restart Firefox.

    Add-On Conflicts

    • Firefox sync can conflict with other browser-sync add-ons, causing duplicate bookmarks and other problems. If you use Xmarks or another add-on that automatically synchronizes your Firefox bookmarks, you’ll need to disable either Firefox sync or your add-on. Click the “Firefox” menu, select “Add-ons” and click “Extensions” to view your installed extensions. Remove any extensions that sync your bookmarks, or disable Firefox sync from Firefox’s options window.
