What Is a Quad SSD?
"Quad SSD" is a marketing term created by Sony to describe the Vaio VPCZ11Z9E notebook, which includes four solid-state storage devices linked together with RAID 0. In a 2011 review, Sebastian Jentsch of NotebookCheck.net praised the high speed of the notebook's storage subsystem and noted the high quality of its display.

The Vaio VPCZ11Z9E's four Samsung solid-state drives offer 64MB of storage each, giving the computer a total storage capacity of 256MB. RAID 0 divides the storage workload among the four SSDs, and makes them appear to Windows as a single storage device. The notebook also features an Intel Core i7 processor, hybrid NVIDIA and Intel graphics, and up to 6GB of memory.

In his review, Jentsch conducted a test of the VPCZ11Z9E's storage subsystem with CrystalDiskMark 3.0, and found that it was able to perform sustained read and write operations at up to 484.4 and 330.5MB per second, respectively. Random read and write scores with 512KB blocks of data were 161.4 and 248.9MB per second.

Reliability

The standard Sony warranty for Vaio notebooks guarantees repair or replacement of any computer that fails within one year of purchase. Samsung also estimates that the mean time between failures of its SSDs is more than one million hours. However, the possibility of failure still exists: Because the notebook uses RAID 0 for data striping, all 256GB of data will be lost if any of the 64GB SSDs fail, which means using a reliable backup system is advisable.
Device Driver Update

In 2010, Sony released an updated device driver for the RAID controller of the Vaio VPCZ11Z9E to improve the startup speed on Windows-based computers.
