Perfecting Web design requires debugging page performance.

The Firebug Web development and debugging tool adds analysis features directly into the Firefox browser. This free open-source add-on enables Web designers and programmers to examine and perfect page code, CSS and JavaScript directly in a browser window. If you're expecting Firebug functionality on your Mac but your add-on doesn't load, you must check one of several possible causes.

  1. Not Installed

    • Firefox's extensive architecture accommodates a long list of add-ons, but that doesn't mean it ships with them. If you've just installed a new operating system version and reinstalled Firefox, you'll need to download and reinstall all of your optional add-ons. Although it's tempting to save some time by reusing an installer you backed up the last time you did a complete browser reinstall, check for a new version. Browser technologies update at a rapid pace that can out-date recent software versions.

    Wrong Version

    • You can't use an old version of Firebug with a newer version of Firefox. If you try to install a Firebug update with an older browser version, you'll experience compatibility issues. Firefox 3.6.x is the last version of the browser that runs on PowerPC hardware, so look in Firebug's downloads for compatible Firebug support if you're using older hardware. You can set Firefox to check automatically for updates to the add-ons you've installed, so it's worth checking manually every once in a while to make sure you don't miss a critical bug fix.

    Not Active

    • Unlike other Web-development add-ons that run all the time and slow page-load times, Firebug only provides input when you ask for it. If you've downloaded and installed Firebug, you must also make it active. Firebug runs on a tab-specific basis, so you must turn it on for each Web page you want to access. If you don't click on the Bug icon at the bottom right corner of your browser window, Firebug won't start. Once you move on to another tab or window, Firebug shuts down again.

    Wrong Browser

    • Firebug's designers created it to run exclusively as an add-on to the Firefox browser. If you're using Safari, Opera, iCab, Chrome, Camino or any other Mac-compatible Web application, Firebug can't run. You can find other add-ons that provide similar functionality in other browsers, or try Firebug Lite, created to offer some of Firebug's capabilities. If you need to use Firebug to maintain compatibility with colleagues, you'll need to run it in Firefox.
