Zimbra and iCal Sync

When you sync an iCal calendar into a Zimba account, the events of the two calendars are combined. ICal stands for iCalendar, which is the Internet calendar format used for a variety of sites, including Google Calendar, IBM Lotus Notes and Apple iCal. You can also export from Zimba into the .ICS format compatible with iCalendar.

  1. Calendar Sync

    • When you sync Internet calendars, the appointments and information saved to each calendar is merged in one place. This feature lets you see all of your upcoming events without having to check multiple calendars. The updates to one calendar are typically not saved via sync in real-time, but rather the next time the user initiates a manual sync or a scheduled sync takes place.

    Zimba

    • Zimba is a collaboration server that facilitates the sharing of email and calendar information. Users can also share contacts and other files using the program. The ZCS Open Source Edition allows users to share data with an infinite number of people, while the Zimbra Appliance and ZCS Network Edition place restrictions on how many users can access shared information. All editions support the sync of iCalendar information.

    Importing iCal

    • To import an existing iCalendar to Zimba, open Zimba on your computer and go to the "Preferences" tab. Choose "Import/Export," go to the "File" field of the "Import" section and locate the .ICS file for the iCalendar on your hard drive. Select an existing calendar as the destination for the iCalendar file or create a new calendar using the on-screen tool. Click "OK," "Import" and then "OK" again. The calendar will be updated per the remote calendar polling intervals set by the administrators.

    Exporting

    • If you export a calendar from Zimba into .ICS and add it to an iCalendar calendar, it will not be synced periodically. The only information added to the iCalendar will be that which is transferred during the export. To export data, go to the "Import/Export" in the "Preferences" tab and choose "Export." Choose "Calendar" as the type and choose the calendar to export in the "Source" field. Click "Export" and then the location to which you want to save the calendar information.
