Qwest M1000 USB Port Functions
The Actiontec M1000 modem comes with one USB port, used to connect the device to a personal computer using the Microsoft Windows 98SE or newer operating system. The M1000 is also known as the Qwest M1000 because of its inclusion as part of the phone provider’s Internet service. In early 2011, CenturyLink acquired Qwest, but kept the M1000 as part of its Internet service.

USB Port Functions
-
The Actiontec M1000 features one Ethernet and one USB port that enable one personal computer to connect to the device at a time. You must install the required software programs, known as drivers, for the M1000 and computer to interface with each other and work properly. The M1000’s USB port is limited in its functionality to transferring data between a DSL Internet connection and the personal computer to which it is connected. You can also use the USB link to download and install the drivers from the Internet if you do not have the installation CD that comes with the modem.
Extension Component
-
On the top of the Actiontec M1000 are two USB-like ports that support a wireless router extension device for giving up to five computing devices, such as computers and mobile phones, wireless access to the Internet. The extension does not require the installation of drivers to work properly and acts independently of the M1000’s USB port. The extension uses the 802.11b and 802.11g Wi-Fi standards to provide wireless access for up to 300 feet indoors. For optimal data transfer speeds -- which can reach speeds of up to 54 megabits per second -- the connected device must be within 40 feet of the wireless router.

System Requirements
-
The Actiontec M1000 is compatible through its Ethernet port with Windows- or Mac-based personal computers, but only with Windows-based computers through its USB port. Your computer must also contain the Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 or Netscape 4.0 or newer Web browsers to interface properly with the M1000 while accessing the Internet. The M1000 connects to a standard 12V AC power outlet for its power requirements and does not contain a battery, which means it is intended to serve as a stationary device.
Considerations
-
Although the Actiontec M1000 contains a USB port, it does not support connections to other computing devices, such as mobile phones or printers. CenturyLink, formerly Qwest, offers a variety of Internet service packages that come with modems from other manufacturers, including 2Wire and Motorola. CenturyLink offers DSL Internet service that is capable of transferring data at up to 15 Mbps. This limitation affects the rate at which your Wi-Fi equipped device, which may be capable of faster data transfer speeds, accesses data from the Web.
