Can an HP Photosmart C4280 Import in Photoshop?

The HP Photosmart C4280 is an all-in-one printer, copy machine and scanner developed by Hewlett Packard. Though Windows has a built-in scanning program that allows you to import images from your Photosmart scanner, you can also import an image directly into the Photoshop digital imaging program. To do this, you can use the TWAIN import option within Photoshop.

  1. About TWAIN

    • TWAIN is a standardized interface that scanners use to communicate and import images to graphic programs, such as Photoshop. The HP Photosmart C4280 is automatically TWAIN compliant, which means as long as you have installed the normal drivers for the device, it can communicate using the TWAIN interface. Older versions of Photoshop also automatically came with a TWAIN importer installed. However, the newest version of Photoshop requires you to install a plugin to use the TWAIN feature.

    Install Photoshop TWAIN

    • The official Adobe website provides a free download of Photoshop CS5 Optional Plugins, which includes the TWAIN feature. The file downloads in .zip format and does require you to unzip the content before you can install the plugin. Copy the “Twain_32” plugin file from the extracted Win32 folder. Navigate to the Plugin-Ins folder of your Photoshop installation, open the Import-Export folder and paste a copy of the “Twain_32” plugin. When you next launch Photoshop, it will have the TWAIN import feature.

    Setting Up Photosmart C4280

    • Ensure your Photosmart scanner is properly connected to your computer through a USB cord, then turn on your scanner. If you have not already installed drivers for your scanner, Windows will prompt you to install the drivers at this point. Open the scanner door and place the image you want to scan face-down on the glass. Close the scanner door securely to prevent outside light from altering the colors of the image.

    Importing Images to Photoshop

    • Launch the Photoshop program on your computer. Click the “File” menu and click “Import.” You should now be able to see the HP Photosmart device listed in your Import menu. Click the Photosmart option and an image import window will appear. You can choose to preview and edit your image or to scan it directly into Photoshop. Once the scan is complete, the image will appear as a new window in your Photoshop program. You can then edit it and save it to your computer like any other digital image.
