Start Up & Recovery Software for the Sony Vaio
Your Sony Vaio is pre-loaded with start-up and recovery software that allows you to re-install your pre-loaded programs, or restore your computer to its original out-of-box condition. This software exists so you can repair your computer in case of accidental program deletion, software corruption, or extreme virus or malware attacks. The Vaio start-up and recovery software is located in the "Recovery & Restore" section of a program called Vaio Care.

Recover Computer
-
Vaio Care features a Recover Computer option that lets you “restore your hard disk drive to its original, factory-installed configuration.” When you click on “Recover Computer” Vaio Care’s Recovery menu, Vaio Care will prompt you, asking if you are sure you want to continue. If you click “Yes,” a full system restore will begin. If you click “No,” the recovery program will cancel. Remember that if you use the Recover Computer option, all data saved on your computer’s hard drive — programs, documents, pictures, music and more — will be permanently deleted; therefore, if you intend to use the Recover Computer option, you should back up any important information to an external hard drive or flash drive.
Applications and Drivers
-
Your Vaio is pre-loaded with various programs and trial software as well as drivers that allow hardware components to function properly. The "Reinstall Applications and Drivers" option, located in the Recovery section of Vaio Care, allows you to re-install individual programs and drivers that were originally loaded on your Vaio. This is a useful tool, especially if you need to re-install only one program or driver, because it eliminates having to completely re-install Windows or having to search the Internet for the exact software you need.

Making Recovery Discs
-
Your Sony Vaio is not pre-packaged with recovery discs, which means you have to burn them for yourself. Some Vaio models require only 2 DVDs, but others require 3 DVDs; be sure to have enough discs on hand to complete at least one full copy of your recovery media. In Vaio Care, click on “Recovery & Restore,” then click on “Recovery.” In the Recovery menu, click on “Create Recovery Media.” The Vaio will prompt you to plug in your computer — even if it is already plugged in — before you can proceed. Click “Next,” insert a DVD in your DVD drive, then click “Next” again. Vaio Care will then guide you through the disc creation process.
Recovery Disc Significance
-
Even though the Vaio features a program that allows you to re-install applications and drivers and an option to recover your computer, recovery discs are essential. If your hard drive fails and you need to install a new one, you will need recovery discs to install Windows on the new hard drive. Similarly, if a virus or other malicious software attacks your computer and destroys your recovery files, the Recover Computer option will not work, and you will need recovery discs to re-install Windows. You can, if necessary, order recovery discs from Sony for a fee — pricing varies according to your Vaio model — but doing so is not as convenient or inexpensive as having a burned copy of the recovery discs immediately available.
