A List of DVDs That Are Compatible With a Toshiba L300

The Toshiba Satellite L300 laptop computer is compatible with eight different types of DVDs, each of which provide users with viable data storage and access solutions. At the time of publication, the L300 is no longer in production, but still available through electronics retailers.

  1. DVD-ROM and DVD-RAM

    • A DVD-ROM disc is a read-only device that is capable of storing between 4.7 and 17 gigabytes of data and is compatible with the Toshiba Satellite L300 laptop computer. DVD-ROM discs are also capable of transferring data at rates of 600 kilobytes to 1.3 megabytes per second. A DVD-RAM disc provides the same capabilities as a DVD-ROM disc, but is only produced by a handful of electronics companies, including Toshiba, for use in their own computing devices.

    DVD-R and DVD+R

    • The Toshiba Satellite L300 also supports the DVD-R and DVD+R discs. The “R” in DVD-R and DVD+R stands for “recordable.” DVD-R and DVD+R discs only accept data once and cannot be written to more than once, which means once you’ve used one of these discs, you cannot use them again. DVD-R and DVD+R discs are good for long-term data storage and are not effective for saving data that constantly changes, such as that in spreadsheets and journals.

    DVD-RW and DVD+RW

    • You can also use DVD-RW and DVD+RW discs with the Toshiba Satellite L300 laptop computer. Unlike DVD-R and DVD+R discs, DVD-RW and DVD+RW discs can be written to multiple times, making them usable beyond their initial use for saving data. When you're saving a file that has changed since you last saved it to a DVD-RW or DVD+RW disc, the computer wipes that particular file from the disc and replaces it with the new version of the file. The “RW” in these discs stands for “rewriteable.”

    Dual Layer DVDs

    • The Toshiba Satellite L300 computer also supports dual layer DVD-R and DVD+R discs which provide two surfaces, or layers, for data to be stored upon. Dual layer DVDs offer twice the capacity offered by single-layer discs and, contrary to some users' belief, do not store data on both sides of the disc. Rather, both layers are contained on and accessed from one side of the disc. Although dual-layer DVD-RW and DVD+RW discs are available, the L300 only supports the single-use DVD-R and DVD+R discs.

    Considerations

    • The Toshiba Satellite L300 laptop also supports CD-ROM, CD-R and CD-RW discs which are earlier versions of DVDs that have the same limitations as their DVD counterparts, but with smaller capacities. DVD-RW and DVD+RW discs are only capable of saving data for several hundred times, depending on the brand purchased.
