ASUS EE Recovery

Viruses, user changes and certain software can damage the operating system on an ASUS Eee PC. Windows 7 requires a variety of system files to control the operation of the system; the OS also uses a registry database to configure how native and third-party software function. If the registry or a system file is corrupted, you can use the Eee PC's recovery software to restore Windows.

  1. Safe Mode

    • Before using the restoration software on the Asus Eee PC, you should run System Restore, System File Checker, CheckDisk and an anti-virus application from Safe Mode -- if accessible -- as system recovery will make permanent changes to the computer. System Restore reverts the computer to a previous, functional state; System File Checker replaces corrupt system files; and CheckDisk prevents the OS from attempting to use bad sectors on the hard drive.

    Hidden Partition

    • The ASUS Eee PC contains a hidden partition where a special restoration software is stored. The software offers an automated process to restore the Eee PC to its original condition. Pressing "F9" at boot launches the software contained on the partition. The netbook should be connected to the power adapter during the recovery process to prevent the computer from powering off while software reinstalls the OS.

    USB Device

    • If you created a backup of the system recovery files on a universal serial bus device, you can use the device to restore the OS if the hidden partition is inaccessible. Ensure the power adapter is connected to the netbook before restoring the OS. Pressing "Esc" at startup opens the boot menu; select "USB" to boot from the removable media device. If the hidden partition is corrupted, selecting "Recover System to Entire HD" is recommended; otherwise, select "Recover System to a Partition" to complete the recovery process.

    Warnings

    • The restoration software deletes all of the files on the hard drive, including your personal data; you will no longer be able to access your old files once recovery begins. Use a hard drive recovery kit to transfer the data on your ASUS Eee PC drive to an external storage device. Also note that Boot Booster -- a feature designed to reduce the time required to boot the netbook -- can interfere with recovery. Disable this feature from the BIOS Setup Utility, accessed at startup, before running the recovery software.
