Impress can help you make presentations to large and small groups.

OpenOffice.org may look like the address of a website, but it's also the name of an Open Source suite of office software applications that provide features, functions and file format support consistent with the offerings in Microsoft Office. Impress serves as the presentation-software component of the suite, with functionality comparable to Microsoft PowerPoint. If you're having trouble opening a PPTX, or PowerPoint XML-format, file in OpenOffice Impress, examine your file, your software and your system set-up to pinpoint your problem.

  1. Cross-Platform Problems

    • Like its commercial software cousin, OpenOffice.org, or OOo, supports the Mac OS, Windows and Linux. Although its files should function across all three operating systems, anyone who's worked in a multi-platform environment can tell you that that ideal and its actuality don't always match up. For example, you may experience font-related problems caused by a typeface that's not installed on, or not available for, the OS you use. Ask the person who created the file which typefaces it uses, and see if she'll substitute fonts you have in common.

    File-Version Problems

    • If you're trying to open a PPTX file in OOo, you may experience problems if the file comes from a newer version of PowerPoint than your software can accommodate. Like many Open Source projects, OOo may take a while to reach feature parity with the commercial software it parallels, with support for new additions to the format trailing slightly behind the commercial product. Check with the originator of the file, and ask her to save it in an older version of the PowerPoint format.

    OOo Bug

    • As of early 2011, an OOo bug could interfere with Impress' ability to open PPTX files saved from Microsoft PowerPoint 2007. If your installation of OOo hasn't kept up to date with the project's updates and bug fixes, you should download and install the newest version of the suite for your operating system. Try opening your file again once your software matches the current version. If you still have trouble, ask for a fresh copy of the document from its source.

    Other Considerations

    • Any time you experience trouble working with files, it's good to check the overall health of your software, operating system and computer. Before you embark on a full-fledged diagnostics session or troubleshooting mission, however, make sure your problems aren't limited to the one PPTX file you've been trying to open. If other PPTX files from the same source behave normally, you simply may have run into one document that your software had trouble opening properly.
