Noting one unusual feature on the face can aid memory.

After meeting a new person for a brief period, it can be difficult to remember their face at a later date. At a social function or business meeting, you may meet a succession of people, and remembering their faces and names can show professionalism and interest. It's important to develop strategies that can assist you in remembering the distinct features of various faces. Use the techniques subtly, and they can help you better recognize people.

  1. Observe

    • During an introduction, pay close attention to the new person's face and name. Observe his face carefully, and pick out one feature that is unusual or stands out. It might be the person's eyes, nose, smile or ears. Relax and show interest. Repeat the person's name in your mind as you look at his face, and make a mental note of the outstanding feature.

    Associate

    • Once you've recognized a distinct feature, associate the face and name with something that is already familiar to you. For example, this person has red hair like Jason; both Frank and Jason are redheads. Next time you see the person, you may have a recollection of that person based on the association. You can also mentally associate a particular feature with a name. For instance, that's Bill with big ears.

    Take a Mental Picture

    • When you are introduced to a new person, take a mental photograph of them. It can be helpful to note the environment where you meet the person. Is the background a garden or a staff conference room? As you speak to the person, try to use her name in a sentence to confirm it: "Nice to meet you, Jessica." Or, you may want to ask their preference: "Should I call you John or Jonathon?"

    Make a Note

    • If you have just met someone and you realize you are "blanking out" on his name, politely ask for a business card. A card can give you more information about the person and make it easier to remember him later. If you have a whole group of people to remember, you may want to jot a note on the back of the business card. For example, "Jeff is very tall and has a new baby."
