Some boot problems are a result of hard drive failure.

The Dell Inspiron e1505 laptop was designed as a general-use computer, coming equipped with an Intel Core2 Duo processor, onboard graphics processing and 1GB of DDR2 memory in its standard configuration. As with many older computers, however, the e1505 occasionally has problems. Some users experience problems when trying to boot the e1505, with the laptop booting slowly or not booting at all.

  1. BIOS Problem

    • One potential cause of boot problems is a change to the e1505's BIOS settings. BIOS is the initialization system used by computers to set up hardware components, initialize the input and output devices of the computer and launch the computer's operating system. If a BIOS error causes booting to fail, an error message detailing the problem will typically prompt you to enter BIOS setup. Entering setup from the error message or by pressing "F2" during startup allows you to correct any recent BIOS changes you've made. If this doesn't correct the BIOS problems, an option to restore all settings to their default configurations is also available in the BIOS menu.

    RAM Error

    • During the boot process, basic checks are made to ensure that essential hardware components are functioning properly. One of the components that is checked is the system's RAM. Though a RAM error may also occur if the RAM module needs to be replaced, many e1505 RAM errors can be resolved by simply removing the RAM module and reinserting it so that it is properly inserted into the laptop's memory bay.

    Hard Drive Failure

    • The average hard drive has a life expectancy of approximately five years. As the e1505 was released in 2007, units which were purchased new upon release and have seen significant use since then may start to experience bootup problems due to hard drive failure or corruption. When hard drive errors are encountered, all data on the drive should be backed up and the drive should be replaced to avoid total drive failure.

    Operating System Error

    • Some boot problems do not manifest themselves until the operating system attempts to load. In some cases the OS will simply freeze when trying to load, while others will see it crash during the loading process, which causes the e1505 to reboot. These problems can be caused by file corruption, excessive file fragmentation or infection by viruses or malware. Many OS-related boot problems can be fixed by using the operating system's repair function or reinstalling the OS.

    Dead CMOS Battery

    • The CMOS battery is a small battery on the computer's motherboard that provides power to the computer chip that the laptop's BIOS is saved to. This allows BIOS settings to be retained even when the laptop is turned off or isn't connected to a power source. If the CMOS battery dies then the BIOS will reset every time the laptop is without power; this can result in boot problems because features such as the internal clock will default to settings that the computer's operating system can't recognize.

    Other Hardware Problems

    • Other hardware problems can also cause the e1505 to experience difficulty during the boot process. Problems such as motherboard failure, CPU failure and physical damage to hardware components cannot be easily fixed and may require the replacement of one or more of the e1505's parts.
