VPN Routers That Support Dynamic VPNs

VPNs work in a wide variety of routers.

A virtual private network allows users to connect to a local area network from remote locations using the Internet. A VPN tunnel connects two LANs together using the Internet. Many routers have VPN capability but none are specifically described as "VPN routers." Although the term "dynamic" appears in the jargon, it does not describe a particular type of VPN. Manufacturers, engineers and administrators use the term "dynamic" to describe different features.

  1. Router Selection for VPN

    • Routers range in size from small to huge. A four-port digital subscriber line router in a home or small office becomes a VPN router when programmed with Windows to allow remote access via the Internet. A router for a large office building may have VPN software provided by the manufacturer or a separate software company. A router must have VPN capability for remote Internet access or VPN tunnels, but selection depends primarily on the application of the network, the number of users and the amount of bandwidth needed for the Internet connection.

    Dynamic Internet Protocol Address

    • An Internet service provider assigns an IP address to any router that connects to the Internet. A dynamic IP address changes from time to time, but a static IP address stays the same. For VPN use, a static address prevents users from having to change their commands when entering, but ISPs don't always have static addresses available. With a dynamic IP address, a VPN can use an Internet service that allows access using a domain name to compensate for IP address changes. Although the router must support this feature, the term "dynamic" identifies the address or service, not the VPN.

    Juniper Dynamic VPN

    • Juniper Networks uses the term "Dynamic VPN" to identify an Internet service that allows users to establish VPN tunnels without having to configure VPN settings on their computers. The administrator accesses Juniper's services online with an address such as "https://(<mynetwork>/dynamic-vpn," then enters the system with a username and password. The router that the administrator uses to access the Internet does not need VPN capability. Juniper Dynamic VPN requires a license for two, five, 10, 25 and 50 concurrent users.

    Cisco Dynamic Multipoint VPN

    • Cisco Systems offers Dynamic Multipoint VPN software to establish several connections to and between branch offices for several users without establishing a permanent VPN connection between the sites. DMVPN also allows access from computers and mobile phones from remote locations. Cisco claims the software improves connection quality, reduces security costs and optimizes bandwidth use. Although Cisco recommends that DMVPN is used on their routers in the 1900, 2900 and 3900 series, it can be used on certain routers made by other manufactures.
