What Do I Do if Meebo Is Blocked?
Employers rarely want to spend their resources on services such as Meebo, an all-in-one instant-messaging client. It's not uncommon for businesses to block access to such sites and other time-hoggers like Facebook and gaming sites. If your organization has a particular problem with employees spending too much time chatting, expect your IT department to limit every foreseeable avenue to those sites -- but a few workarounds do exist. Just know that all your computer activity at your workplace can be, and probably is, monitored.
-
Web Proxy
-
One option when Meebo is blocked is to use a Web proxy. A Web-based proxy is a site you visit, and that site initiates all connections to other sites on your behalf. Many people use a proxy site to preserve some online privacy, but a proxy can also help you access sites that are blocked from your current location. Thousands of Web proxies exist, and many come and go. For a list of current and active proxies, visit an aggregator site such as Proxy.org or ProxyLister.
Meebo Mobile
-
Another workaround is to use your phone. Point your mobile Web browser to meebo.com/mobile. Alternatively, download Meebo apps for your device. The service has apps for iPhone, Android and BlackBerry. Your mobile phone, of course, is also another means to quickly send messages to your friends and family. Other mobile chat-services like Yahoo!, Google Talk or Skype can help you reach your contacts on those respective services.

Competitors
-
Meebo isn't the only name in the game -- check out its competitors when it's blocked. Try, for example, KoolIM, digsby, Trillian, Kopete and IM+. Adium is downloadable multiplatform chat software specifically for those in a Mac environment, and Pidgin is for PCs, while eBuddy is both a Web- and mobile-based IM aggregator. Many Web-based instant-messaging services also allow you to connect with contacts on other services. For example, Gmail's chat service connects with AOL and AIM users, and Yahoo!'s service can connect with Windows Live users. Moreover, chances are most of your contacts are on Facebook, so if you can get to Facebook, it can, by design, be an all-in-one chat service.
Email and Text
-
Having Meebo blocked need not prevent you from reaching your contacts. You have the option of sending emails or text messaging your contacts, which offers near-instant communication as well. A phone call can also work in a pinch.
