It's not uncommon for businesses to block access to such sites and other time-hoggers like Facebook and gaming sites. If your organization has a particular problem with employees spending too much time chatting, expect your IT department to limit every foreseeable avenue to those sites -- but a few workarounds do exist. Many Web-based instant-messaging services also allow you to connect with contacts on other services. For example, Gmail's chat service connects with AOL and AIM users, and Yahoo!'s service can connect with Windows Live users. Moreover, chances are most of your contacts are on Facebook, so if you can get to Facebook, it can, by design, be an all-in-one chat service.
