Audio Drive on iTunes Not Working

Error messages about iTunes's audio features or difficulties using iTunes with your disk drive indicate some type of software conflict. Once you've identified the source of the conflict it should be easy to fix. ITunes, device drivers, firmware, iTunes plug-ins and audio enhancers are all potential culprits, so examining all that are applicable should enable you to resolve your problem.

  1. ITunes Updates

    • Updating to the latest version of iTunes available from Apple often resolves unknown software problems. Visit Apple's website to download and install updates and restart your computer when you are finished.

    Driver Updates

    • Sometimes the software that helps the audio components on your computer work needs to be updated. Drivers are software applications in your computer that help your computer communicate with a piece of hardware. Internal drivers that help your computer communicate with components like the DVD drive are called firmware. To ensure that all these drivers are up-to-date, first make sure that all available updates from Windows are installed. Then visit your computer manufacturer's website to find out if there are any firmware updates, particularly for the disk drive, graphics card or sound card.

    Third Party Plug-ins

    • Sometimes third-party plug-in applications designed to enhance iTunes can cause errors, especially if iTunes was recently updated and the plug-in wasn't. To find these applications, first show hidden folders in Windows. Open the Control Panel from the Start menu, click Appearance and Personalization, click Show Hidden Files and Folders under Folder Options, click the View tab, check the Show Hidden Files and Folders box and click "OK." Then enter the following folder path into the Start menu's Search box: C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes\iTunes Plug-ins. Move the items in this folder one at a time to the desktop to temporarily disable them, testing after each one to see if the problem is resolved. If this helps you identify the problem, notify the relevant plug-in's manufacturer.

    Sound Enhancer Conflicts

    • If you are using sound or speaker enhancements on your computer, they may be conflicting with iTunes's Sound Enhancer. Try disabling this feature if you use it. From the iTunes Edit menu select Preferences, select the Playback tab and deselect Sound Enhancer. Alternatively, try disabling hardware enhancers, either by using the configuration software that came with your hardware or through the Control Panel. Open the Control Panel from the Start menu, click Hardware and Sound and select Sound. On the Playback tab select Speakers, click Properties and open the Enhancements tab. Then select the Disable All Enhancements check box.

    Repairing ITunes

    • If you recently installed another program that uses the CD burner, you may need to repair the iTunes installation. Close iTunes if it's running and open the Control Panel from the Start menu. Click Uninstall a Program underneath Programs. Find and click iTunes in the list of programs and click "Repair." Then click "Repair" again to confirm.
